The reason for my decision

My recent surgery had a significant impact on me.

On the night of my surgery, I had a terrible sore throat from the tube they used during the anesthesia.

My voice was raspy and it was hard to talk.

I lay there envisioning the horror of never being able to stand on a stage and teach.

What if I lose my voice permanently?

I stared up at the ceiling and imagined what could have happened had I not gone to my doctor to complain about my symptoms.

I could have died.

It's easy to scare yourself at 1:00 a.m. in a dark hospital room.

Tears dropped down onto my scratchy hospital gown as I recited to myself the words of Oliver Wendell Holmes,

…Alas for those that never sing,
But die with all their music in them!

I could have died.

I saw a movie in my mind…

All the people who have been through my training programs over the past 30 years…
